Not all asset records are created equal. A quality score tells you which records you can trust and which ones need attention before they go into your DCIM platform.

Why Quality Scores Matter

Every asset record in your inventory has a different level of reliability. A record with a confirmed serial number, a matched device type, a verified rack location, and a known status is highly reliable. A record with only a hostname and an approximate location is not. Without a way to distinguish between these two types of records, you treat them the same — and that is where data quality problems enter your DCIM platform.

A data quality score is a numeric measure of how complete and reliable an asset record is. It gives you a way to prioritise data cleanup efforts, set import thresholds, and communicate data quality to stakeholders. Instead of saying "our data is pretty good", you can say "78% of our records score above 80, and the 22% that score below 80 are concentrated in the legacy hardware area of the data centre".

What a Quality Score Measures

A well-designed quality score measures completeness and reliability across the fields that matter most for DCIM use cases. The most important fields, and their contribution to the score, are:

Manufacturer (vendor) — 20 points. A record with a confirmed, normalised manufacturer name scores full points. A record where the manufacturer was inferred from the hostname or description scores partial points. A record with no manufacturer information scores zero.

Model — 20 points. A record with a model name that matched against the device type library scores full points. A record with a model name that was not matched scores partial points. A record with no model information scores zero.

Serial number — 20 points. A record with a serial number that passes format validation (correct length and character set for the vendor) scores full points. A record with a serial number that fails validation scores partial points. A record with no serial number scores zero.

Rack location — 20 points. A record with a fully parsed location (site, building, row, rack, and U position) scores full points. A record with a partial location (site and rack but no U position) scores partial points. A record with no location information scores zero.

Status — 10 points. A record with a status that maps to the DCIM platform's controlled vocabulary scores full points. A record with an unmapped status scores zero.

Classification — 10 points. A record that was classified by keyword rules (high confidence) scores full points. A record that was classified by AI inference (lower confidence) scores partial points. A record that could not be classified scores zero.

Interpreting Quality Scores

A score of 90 to 100 indicates a high-quality record that is ready for DCIM import without manual review. A score of 70 to 89 indicates a good record with one or two gaps that should be reviewed but are not blocking. A score of 50 to 69 indicates a record with significant gaps that should be reviewed before import. A score below 50 indicates a low-quality record that requires manual attention before it can be reliably used in a DCIM platform.

For most organisations, the distribution of quality scores follows a pattern: a large cluster of high-scoring records (well-documented production equipment), a smaller cluster of medium-scoring records (equipment added without full documentation), and a tail of low-scoring records (legacy equipment, decommissioned assets still in the inventory, and records from unreliable data sources).

Using Quality Scores to Prioritise Cleanup

The most valuable use of quality scores is to prioritise data cleanup work. Rather than trying to improve every record at once, focus on the records that are close to a threshold — for example, records that score 65 to 75, which could move above the 70 threshold with one or two field additions.

For records that score below 50, the cleanup effort required may be significant. Before investing time in manual research, evaluate whether the record represents an asset that is still in service. Low-scoring records are disproportionately likely to represent decommissioned equipment that was never removed from the inventory. A quick physical check — does the asset actually exist in the location recorded? — can eliminate many low-scoring records from the cleanup queue.

Setting Import Thresholds

Quality scores can be used to set import thresholds — minimum scores required for a record to be included in a DCIM import. A common approach is to import all records above 70 in the first pass, then work on improving the records between 50 and 70 for a second pass, and flag records below 50 for manual review.

This approach ensures that your DCIM platform is populated with reliable data from the start, rather than being polluted with low-quality records that will require cleanup later. It also gives you a clear metric for measuring progress — the percentage of records above the import threshold should increase over time as data quality improves.

Tracking Quality Over Time

Quality scores are most valuable as a trend metric. If the average quality score of your asset inventory is improving over time, your data governance processes are working. If it is declining, new data is being added without sufficient quality controls.

Track the distribution of quality scores at each data collection cycle — after each hardware refresh, after each site audit, after each data source integration. Report the trend to stakeholders as a measure of data governance maturity. A rising average quality score is evidence that the investment in data normalisation and quality management is paying off.
